Eye Injury

A painful eye should be treated as a same day emergency in the horse. Most conditions can be easily managed with prompt intervention, but if treatment is delayed severe disease can occur, which comes with an increased risk of visual impairment.

Clinical signs of a painful eye include the following.

  • Excessive tearing

  • Holding the eye closed

  • Blinking more frequently than normal

  • Swollen eyelids

  • Eyelashes drooping
