Trapped Horse

  • As well as contacting the vet, you may need to call the emergency services making sure the dispatcher knows how many horses are involved and the likelihood of the requirement for specialist equipment to be brought with them.

  • Do what you can to clear the area and cordon off a safe zone. Human safety should remain a priority in horse rescues, so try to minimise the number of people within the ‘danger’ area (near the trapped horse).

  • Keep the horse as calm as possible. In some cases covering their eyes and ears with a towel or coat will help settle them.

  • The emergency services will not commence any work to free the horse until a vet is present and has made a plan for sedation or anaesthetic drugs required.
