Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the practice of inserting fine needles into particular points in the body to treat a variety of ailments. Acupuncture was originally practiced in China, but has since been adopted into Western Medicine and is now being used worldwide in both human and veterinary medicine.

By law, acupuncture on animals can only be performed by Veterinary Surgeons. Insertion of the acupuncture needle at the correct location stimulates neuroendocrine responses, resulting in the release of neurotransmitters and hormones. The consequence is provision of pain relief and relaxation. In the majority of cases, placement of the needles is non-painful, but it can produce short-term discomfort in horses with intense muscle spasm. In these cases, we may administer a low dose of sedation prior to commencing treatment.

Acupuncture has been used in the treatment and management of many conditions, but at Hampton Equine Vets we most often use this as an adjunctive treatment in musculoskeletal and orthopaedic cases. This includes horses and ponies struggling with neck and back pain,  as part of rehabilitation following a surgical procedure (for example ‘kissing spines’ surgery), or to aid recovery and ease muscle tension after strenuous exercise (e.g. at a long format event).

Typically acute conditions tend to respond quicker than chronic conditions which may require more sessions.
