Dentistry
Equines have hypsodont teeth which erupt continually throughout their lifetime. Prior to domestication, they continually wore their teeth as they grazed a wide variety of grasses for long periods of time. However, changes in modern management, including diet and routine, means horses now require routine dental examinations so that any issues can be addressed and treated at an early stage.
Poor dentition may result in pain, ridden performance issues, choke, or weight loss. At present, we do not provide a service for routine dental work, but recommend that your horse or pony receives a dental examination at least once yearly by a vet or qualified equine dental technician (EDT). Hampton Equine Vets will sedate for BAEDT members. A list of fully qualified BAEDT members is available on the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians Website.
